AFFORDABLE PRODUCTS IN MALAYSIA

Malaysia is a shopping haven, but to get the best buys, you need to know where to go.  I want your stay in Malaysia to give you maximum value for your money.  In line with this aspiration, I am constantly on the lookout for current places you can buy affordable products in Malaysia.

Since I am a Malaysian resident myself, I can tell you some little-known ways to get great bargains of good quality products and services in Malaysia that other websites do NOT know.

On this page, I share with you the latest promotions, offers, discounts and little-known places you can get goods and services at reasonable prices.  So bookmark this page and come back often.

1.   FLEA MARKET

This place is a bargain hunter’s dream come true!  You can find fine products at unbeatable prices at a flea market.

One of the most popular (and new!) flea markets is the Sunday Sundaes Bazaar.  It is located at 3rd mile Square, Old Klang Road in Kuala Lumpur.  As the name suggests, it takes place on Sundays, from 10.30am to 6.00pm.  The flea market comprises of many unique stalls selling all kinds of interesting things.

You can get plenty of fashionable clothes and good-quality accessories.  In addition, you can find lots of knick-knacks, pretty trinkets and even CD’s.

Some of these goods are second-hand but rest assured that they are still new as they have been used only a few times.  Although second-hand, some of the goods are of designer brands so their quality is guaranteed.

You can even find a stall where you can custom-make your own bracelet.

2.   NIGHT MARKETS

Night markets is a way of life in Malaysian urban cities.  Most of the major towns have night markets situated along a closed-off road where hawker and road-side stalls are set up selling everything like clothes, souvenirs, T-shirts, socks, copies of branded goods, music and videos CD’s, trinkets, food etc.

Night market goods are usually cheaper than the same type of things found in shopping malls.  That’s why the locals go to night markets to buy their goods.

The main night market in Kuala Lumpur is in Kampung Baru.  It takes place on Saturday nights starting at about 6.30pm (see my page on Kuala Lumpur - Attractions, Sights and Places to See).  If you’re staying in Kuala Lumpur, you may like to go to neighboring Petaling Jaya (Kuala Lumpur’s satellite city situated about 7 miles away).  Petaling Jaya (or PJ for short) has its own night market.

The Petaling Jaya night market is found in section SS2 and takes place on 2 nights each week, Monday and Thursday at the same time as the Kampung Baru one.

3.   PETALING STREET or CHINATOWN Kuala Lumpur

Chinatown Kuala Lumpur is situated in Petaling Street.  See my page Kuala Lumpur - Attractions, Sights and Places to See.  It’s where many tourists go everyday to pick up great bargains of shoes, clothes, souvenirs, perfume, personal accessories and lots more.

The great thing about Petaling Street Chinatown is that it’s open from day to night!

4.   HYPERMARKETS

Hypermarkets are also a way of life in urban Malaysia.  Hypermarkets are different from supermarkets.  If you need everyday items like toiletries, toothpaste, clothes, food, titbits and even generic medicines, you can get them at hypermarkets for cheaper prices than at supermarkets.

You need to know the major hypermarkets so that you can distinguish them from ordinary supermarkets.  Here are the main hypermarkets in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya:

a.  Giant Hypermarket

b.  Tesco

c.  Carrefour (from France) located in Subang Jaya, a suburb of Petaling Jaya

d.  Servay Hypermarket (only in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah)

6.   FACTORY OUTLET STORE

A little-known place to shop for clothes is Factory Outlet Store (FOS).  You can find FOS’s in most major shopping malls such as the Curve shopping mall (just next to Ikano Power Center, see below) in Petaling Jaya.

As the name suggests, the clothes here are brought in wholesale from the factories and thus slightly cheaper than in other retail outlets of the shopping malls.

7.  IKEA store

The name IKEA is synonymous with good quality do-it-yourself household items and furniture.  You may not be able to buy bulky home furniture while on your stay in Malaysia but you can certainly pick up some beautiful small home furnishing items, decorations, ornaments etc.

The best place to shop for such items is IKEA.  IKEA of Sweden is famed for making designer DIY household items and furniture and passing the savings to the customers.

So if you do not have IKEA in your home country, you can shop at IKEA in Malaysia.  IKEA has its mega store at Ikano Power Center in Petaling Jaya.
